A few years ago, I figured out that I’m allergic to the chemical used on tomatoes to make them ripen sooner. My allergic reaction took me to the emergency room with hives. I had to recall everything I had eaten and the only thing out of the ordinary were some cherry tomatoes. For some reason, I have a worse reaction to those than any other tomato. I still get an allergic reaction sometimes if I eat a salad at a restaurant, but now I know the symptoms and how to deal with it.
Buying organic was a good option, but expensive. This motivated me to grow some of the things I like to use in my cooking.
My garden has two areas: a herb section and a section for some lettuce and different types of tomatoes. The herb section currently has: parsley, basil, oregano, and dill.
I learned that the herbs grow just fine from seeds, but that the lettuce and tomatoes are better off starting with a plant. The tomato plants grow tall and aren’t very stable. I had to buy some gardening spikes to help the plant from falling over.
It’s very rewarding to be cooking dinner and just walk to my garden to grab what I need. I know that I grew it and that it doesn’t have any chemicals that can make me sick.
